MS-DOS 6.0
SPECIAL ENHANCEMENTS GUIDE
This file describes how to install Toshiba's MS-DOS 6.0 special enhancements,
and is for owners of Toshiba computers who are upgrading to Microsoft's MS-DOS
6.0 operating system.
THE SPECIAL ENHANCEMENTS
The files on the Special Enhancements Disk enable the following features for
Toshiba computers with MS-DOS 6.0:
o Resume mode
o The Pop-up Window
o Hard RAM
The diskette contains a Setup program that automatically installs the enhanced
files on your computer's hard disk. You cannot access these special Toshiba
features with MS-DOS 6.0 until you install the enhanced files.
HOW THE SETUP UTILITY WORKS
Setup copies enhanced versions of several MS-DOS 6.0 files to your hard disk.
The Special Enhancements Disk also includes the original MS-DOS 6.0 files.
This allows you to remove the Toshiba features at a later time.
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The README.TXT file contains a list of the Toshiba computers that require the
Special Enhancements Disk. To view the README.TXT file:
1 Insert the Special Enhancements Disk in drive A.
2 At the MS-DOS prompt, enter "type a:readme.txt|more"
(without the quote marks) and press Enter.
MS-DOS displays the contents of the file, one page at a time.
THE SPECIAL ENHANCEMENTS FILES
Setup copies the README.TXT file to the hard disk and replaces the following
MS-DOS 6.0 files:
Filename Description
------------------------------------------------------------------
EMM386.EXE a program that provides Resume and Pop-Up Window
support
FDISK.EXE a program that provides Hard RAM support
SMARTDRV.EXE a program that provides Hard RAM support
IO.SYS a program that provides Hard RAM and Resume support
USING SETUP
Follow these steps to run Setup:
1 Install MS-DOS 6.0 following the instructions in the MS-DOS
Documentation.
If MS-DOS 6.0 is already on your system you may skip this step. The
easiest way to check the current version of MS-DOS is to type "ver"
(for version) at the system prompt and press Enter.
2 Insert the Special Enhancements Disk into your computer's
diskette drive.
3 Switch to the diskette drive (at an MS-DOS prompt, type "a:"
and press Enter).
NOTE: You cannot run Setup from a DOS session under Microsoft Windows.
Exit Windows before running Setup.
Type "Setup" and press Enter.
As the Setup program loads, it determines which version of DOS 6.0 is
already installed on your system. The text you see on the screen
depends on whether or not the enhancements are already installed.
INSTALLING THE SPECIAL ENHANCEMENTS
If Setup finds MS-DOS 6.0 without the special enhancements installed, the next
screen displays the Install option.
1 Press Enter to install the special enhancements. Setup copies
the enhanced files to your hard disk.
Or, press Esc to cancel the procedure and return to MS-DOS.
2 Setup displays a message that indicates the success of the
operation. Remove the diskette from your drive.
3 Press any key to re-boot your system.
Resume mode, the Pop-up Window and Hard RAM are available.
REMOVING THE SPECIAL ENHANCEMENTS
If Setup finds the enhanced on the hard disk, the next screen offers an
opportunity to remove the special enhancements.
1 Press Enter to remove the special enhancements. Setup replaces
the enhanced files with the original files.
Or, press Esc to cancel the procedure and return to MS-DOS.
2 Setup displays a message that indicates the success of the
operation. Remove the diskette from your drive.
3 Press any key to re-boot your system.
Resume mode, the Pop-up Window and Hard RAM are unavailable.
